Saxophone For Beginners: A Small Guide On How To Practice To Play Saxophone Quick!

So, you’re new to the colorful world of music? And you’ve decided to choose the saxophone as your friend? That’s awesome, because saxes are great instruments to begin with. And they’re not that hard to learn how to play once you know the basics.

But what precisely are the basic steps should you take? Let’s talk about it for a while.

The very first thing you need to do is, of course, to choose for yourself a good sax! Although it sounds simple, it’s not. If you’re a new comer, it would be a great choice to choose the Alto sax as the starting point. It’s easier to master. And once you feel more confident with it, you can change to the Tenor saxophone. Always remember that the Alto and Tenor saxophones are the best for beginners. Do not equip yourself anything different until you master the two!

A small tip about choosing a decent instrument for you when you begin. Although the price ranges wildly (from as low as around $200 to approximately $1000), now you can have a decent one with good customer service with an affordable price. Now you have it, your instrument. It’s time to practice yourself to success!

One of the most important techniques while training with saxes is embouchure! Without it, it’s hard to produce good sounds. And to maximize your ability and speed up the learning process, it’s best to practice this technique everyday. It will create momentum. And if you can follow it long enough, you will see significant improvement. A small notice here, always take out the mouthpiece after practicing. Leaving it on the instrument will make early cork replacement!

For better result when learning with music, you should put the music paper in front of you at a right height. Bowing constantly while playing your instrument is not a good idea. Bad posture will only create bad sounds. Another quick tip: equip yourself a music stand! It solves this problem. And try to do it right from the beginning. It will become a great habit.

When you begin your adventure, you should play regularly to control your tone. You will have to play long notes for a long period of time. Although it seems a little bit boring, it’s needed for future improvement. Just like my little brother training with the violin, he has to train with only one tone at a time until he master it. The same is true with playing saxophones.

And here’s another portable tips for sax newbies. Always keep your fingers close to the keys. It will decrease the time your fingers move between buttons. It’s a great way to train your dexterity.
